Kyo opened his mouth to protest her words of self-doubt and blame, to reassure her that he was just as much to blame—if not more, had he not been such a coward, such a fool, such an idiot for so much of his life—but stopped himself. He could say those things all he wanted, Tohru would continue to think it was her fault regardless of what he said or how many times he repeated it. He knew she would because he knew her, and he also knew himself. In the end, if he just kept repeating himself to her, he’d get frustrated because she would still blame herself, and it would end badly for both of them.
While she didn’t feel as if she were going to pull away or out of his hand, he gave her fingers a squeeze, though whether to wordlessly implore that he didn’t hold anything against her, or to reassure her he was here now and was not going anywhere, he wasn’t sure of, himself. He let her talk without interrupting her, savouring each word she said as much as he could—not because of any sort of beauty, but because Tohru so rarely let herself express feelings like this. He knew she took far too much responsibility on her slender shoulders—she always had, and probably always will. He hated himself for being part of that burden, but was also humbled by the fact that she had willingly taken it up for him without a second thought. Without forethought, really, because that was just.. Tohru. And that’s who he loved, because she was Tohru, and she couldn’t be anyone else—he wouldn’t want her to be.
The edge of his family’s property came marked with the edge of the forest, and the noises of the cars seemed to break a spell that had come over them in the quiet of the trees. He couldn’t take his eyes from the offending vehicles, breaking this long moment he had with Tohru after so many years, and he knew he was probably glaring at them. When she softly called his name, however, he tore his gaze from the cars up ahead of them and down to her, not knowing just how much his expression softened toward her. He felt warmth bloom through his chest and reach up to his mouth as he echoed her smile back to her—I am but the helpless moon to her sun, always reflecting the light that she shines on me.
“I—” He stopped, though he didn’t know why. “Yes,” he agreed. “There’s no reason to start over. People make mistakes. People… hurt each other, when they don’t mean to. We—I—do stupid things sometimes. But we’re still here and alive and breathing, and that’s what’s important now. We’re here together.” He inwardly winced. Perhaps not quite the best choice of words, but he had never been good at that. He didn’t want to say what else was on his mind, but he knew that he had to. For both their sakes.
“I… I want to make sure of something, though.” Kyo didn’t want it coming out sounding ominous, and he did his best to try and make it as little that as possible, but he was afraid he failed at doing so. He stopped their slowing pace to a halt before they drew too near the edge of the forest and the edge of their moment. “There are two things I think are important we address. One is no, I don’t want to dwell on the past or its sadness and hurts… but we can’t just ignore it, either. I want us to heal, and I learned the hard way that the best way to do that is to face it and make amends with it, not just pretend it’s okay when it’s not.”
He took a breath, gathering himself inside. “And also… We need to be really open with one another. I mean, we kinda already are, but it’s needs to be more. If there’s something bothering you—even if it’s something that was years ago, or five minutes ago, or hasn’t happened yet—you need to tell me about it. Don’t worry about bothering me,” he said, shaking his head a bit, anticipating her protest to that request, ” ‘cause you wouldn’t be. You don’t bother me at all, understand? The only way we’ll get through this together is to work as a team, and you gotta talk to your team to make things right.” He released her hand and slid his hands up her arms lightly, coming to rest near the top of her shoulders. “Okay? Does that sound okay to you?” Because I desperately want this to work, Tohru, you don’t know, and I know I will have to do work in telling you things, and not bottling up, and not exploding… but I will do it all and more for you. “And I’ll try my damnest, too, I promise you,” he added.
It felt like a silence fell over them, and Kyo couldn’t hear or see anything but Tohru, before him, in that moment. Only when another car made its way down the small street just outside the Sohma property did it break his tunnel vision and bring him back to the world beyond her.
She listened carefully as Kyo spoke, both agreeing with her and adding his own stipulations. He spoke softly, as if he didn’t want to disturb the sound of the wind in the trees, and held her carefully, like she was some porcelain doll that could shatter any minute. He was right, though. Everything he had said. They would have to work at this, they definitely needed to be open and honest with each other. Tohru would have the more difficult time with that, seeing as while she has no problems being honest, she never wanted to hurt anyone’s feelings, and so speaking her thoughts and wishes never came easy. But she would definitely try, especially if it was what Kyo wanted.
He took a moment, just staring at her, and she wondered if he was trying to find words, to say something else, but then it looked like his mind had wandered away. He was just so intently focused on her face, and she instantly could feel a blush rising in her cheeks. Another thing she would never get used to. She had never managed to understand in the past why he looked at her the way he did, but now, now she understood it. But it didn’t mean she had to get used to it. It was only with the whizzing by of a passing car that the two were snapped from their daze. A small grin crept on to her lips as Kyo blinked a few times, coming back to his senses.
“I just imagine a future where we spend entire days staring at each other. We’d forget to do everything we had planned for the day, because we would just sit at the table, staring…” She laughed. How long had they stood there? A minute? Two? She couldn’t remember when the conversation had tapered off. Time seemed to have no relevance in that moment. She wondered if it would be like that always; endless days and a timelessness that would make them feel like they lived forever. It would be worth it though, if she could spend that forever with him.
She took his hand again, and walked out of the forest, a whole new soundtrack behind them now. Cars and horns, wind chimes and doors slamming. A crumpled piece of paper rolling down the street in the breeze. Even though it was much noisier than the woods, it was still peaceful. Days like this were her favorite. A nice, calm breeze, a blue sky, not dreadfully not, nor too cold. And what better day could she ask for for all of this to happen.
Looking up at Kyo, she resisted the urge to press her forehead to his arm, to wrap her own around his torso, and instead simply leaned into him, just enough so that their arms were touching. That would do for now. She already worried a little that it was too much, that they might get odd looks, but for now, her heart overruled her head.
“Where should we go now?” She asked, looking left, then right, at their prospects. Her stomach made a small, whisper of a grumble, she hadn’t eaten since breakfast that morning, but she could wait. Tohru didn’t want to put a halt to their walk, or possibly put an end to this altogether. Meals usually signified the end of the meeting, and they still hadn’t worked up the courage to discuss what would happen at the end of the night.
[I seriously wish I had someone to write with here.
I’m not asking for much guys, it could be crack, it could be AU, serious, heart breaking, what. ever.
I don’t even see the fecking point in logging on anymore because seriously NO ONE talks to Tohru. I never get any responses to starters, never get replies from people when I ask if we could rp, nothing.
Its kinda lame.]
Gah! I meant I’m kind of a crappy writer but I would like to write with tohru if that’s okay :)
[If you’d like to ^_^ I’d be down, and I’m sure you’re not a ‘crappy’ writer. Do you have a character you’d like to use?]
people complaining that they don’t like Kyo and Tohru being together because he was cold towards her in the beginning of the series and Yuki was much kinder….
Kyo is a very emotionally closed off person in the beginning of the series (Yuki is too, but they show it in different ways) but more imporantly he FEELS LIKE HE IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR HER MOTHER’S DEATH, so if he doesn’t get the warm fuzzies wanting to hang out with her or flirt with her all the time I’m sorry THAT KINDA MAKES SENSE!

Spending her days at work or at home, Tohru had a lot of time to think about things. At school, they’ve begun the daily ministrations of checking with each student about what they’re doing after high school, and the gears in Tohru’s head have been working.
The last thing she wanted to do was disappoint her teachers or her counselor, but she still wasn’t sure what she wanted! After school had let out that day, she didn’t particularly feel like going home. The house would be empty anyway, and only add to her sadness. So she made the trip to the local library, hoping something would catch her interest for a few hours. To fall into a good book would be ideal.
What happened instead, was she wound up carousing history section, drawn in by a section dedicated to Chinese cultures, histories, and myths. She wondered if she could find anything about her zodiac family. She never thought to look in a book for assistance. There were a few interesting choices, but they were so high up she had to immediately disregard them. Perhaps once she found a step stool. To her advantage, there were plenty at her level, and she immediately grabbed all she could, and sat on the floor in the aisle. No one had been down the entire time she was there, so she figured she wouldn’t be a burden to anyone, and cracked open her first book.
Tohru savored her mothers embrace, realizing how much she actually missed it. Remembering how much of a comfort it was to be hugged by her. She had forgotten how nice it was. That was such a shame. What was even more of a shame was that this all seemed so real, felt so real, but she was still convinced this was not right. Tohru of course remembered the accident like it was yesterday. Remembered getting the call, and seeing the site, and then all of the processes and arrangements for the funeral. She remembered burying her mother…and while it would make sense for the old Kyoko to do something like stage her own death to escape trouble, it would not make sense for her mother to abandon her like that. Which is how she knew she was dreaming.
The way she told it though, it made her laugh. Her shoulders shook with laughter, and much though she wanted to stay where she was, she wanted to look up at her mom again, her smile so wide it began to hurt.
“Sounds great, mom…I can’t believe you fooled all those Yakuza!” She teased, going along with the story for a moment before her mother hugged her again. Still, so real, so comforting and honest and…a dream. It was a dream, she had to remember that. In fact, Tohru could remember now, that this was something called Lucid Dreaming…when one knows they’re dreaming and thus can control what happens. Does that mean she is controlling the whole thing? Including what her mom said and did? Of course she was, Kyoko wasn’t really here…she was just projecting what she remembered of her. How she always tried to make things better, and lighter when she was stressed out like this.
“I know mom….I’m sorry. They’re just important tests, is all. I really need to do well on them.” She explained, mumbling into her shoulder as she gripped the woman tighter. She might as well appreciate this while it lasted. Who knew when she was going to wake up.
Kyoko rested her hand on Tohru’s head, gently running her fingers through her hair, just holding her for the moment, it was so wonderful to hear her laugh. Oh the sound was more beautiful than a chorus of angels, Kyoko teared up just a little because of it. But it was happiness.
“Oh my sweetheart, I know and I am so proud of you, you are trying so hard and doing so well, I could be more proud than I am of you now.” She said softly, taking her face in her hands again and leaning up to press a gentle kiss to her forehead.
“You’re going to do splendidly, much better than me, eh?” she teased winking, “I know how hard you’re working, that’s why you’re sick, you silly child,” she said and smiled just a bit sadly.
“I wish I could be there- no I should be there to make you feel better, but I’m not…I’m sorry Tohru, you deserve so much more.” This time she couldn’t stop the tear from sliding down her cheek.
Kyoko knew the true difficulty of what it was like to leave someone behind, and to be left behind as well. She wished Tohru never had to face that, not so early in her life, and yet she was able to smile and be so strong. Kyoko felt the pride swelling in her chest, her daughter was just so amazing.
“When you wake up, I want you to ask that boy to help you study, alright? I know you’ll do magnificently, My Tohru,” she said smiling and brushing her thumb along Tohru’s cheek. “My beautiful, strong, amazing daughter…I…we are so proud of you. We’re so happy that you are our daughter. Thank you Tohru.”
Tohru smirked and nodded. She always did like to crack jokes like that, and apparently Tohru could remember it well if it was reflected in her dreams.
“Right. I’ll try not to stress out about it so much. No guarantees though, I know I’ll try my hardest, so…” she trailed off, wondering what else there was to say. This had been just what she needed, it turned out. Her mother’s well wishes and words of encouragement had been just the thing to set her mind at ease. Not that it would help the fever she induced upon herself from stressing, or the fact that she still had a lot of studying to do. But it had set her mind at ease a bit. And told her that she is in pretty good shape for the tests, so taking a small break from her studies wouldn’t set her back much.
“Kyo?” She asked, taking notice of the next subject Kyoko brought up. Tohru shook her head sadly.
“Kyo hasn’t been around much to help me. U-unless you mean Yuki! Oh, but he’s been busy too. To be honest, it’s been kind of lonely.” She sighed. That was another thing she worried about. Not Yuki, he was fine, just busy. Just Kyo. Off to God knows where, doing God knows what. She was constantly scared that he was going to get hurt, or that he wasn’t going to come back. But she supposed it was better than being imprisoned. If only he would write some times. She could stop being so nervous about it. But what would he write for? It’s not like they had anything…well.. it’s not like he had a reason to write.
“I know you are…”she smiled, leaning into her mothers hand.
“I’ll try to do my best for you, okay?” She offered, looking up at her with a determined face. “I’d hate to disappoint you.”
